Terrain visibility analysis

Can you see Mont Ventoux from Avignon?

This example studies the sight line between Avignon and Mont Ventoux, from the Rhône plain to the final terrain approaching the summit.

Short answer: Yes. From the studied point in Avignon, the 1,910 m summit clears the modelled terrain horizon over a distance of 45.3 km.

This page explains a reproducible Sightelo case. The result is recalculated on demand with the available elevation data; it is not a guaranteed real-world observation.

Terrain profile and line of sightCalculated terrain along the full route from observation point A to summit B. The sight line and minimum visibility line use the same curvature and refraction model as the calculation. At the summit, the target clears the modelled horizon by 272.9 m. No blocking terrain is calculated. Terrain already includes modelled curvature and refraction (k = 0.13). The grey curve is the 0 m reference: subtract it from the terrain curve to read real elevation. Sight lines remain straight; no second curvature correction is applied. Vertical and horizontal scales differ.

At the summit, the target clears the modelled horizon by 272.9 m. No blocking terrain is calculated. The relief forming the horizon is 43.704 km from A.

The calculation models terrain, Earth curvature and standard atmospheric refraction. It does not model buildings, trees, clouds, haze or local atmospheric variations.

Is Mont Ventoux really visible from Avignon?

The Sightelo profile indicates that the summit clears the topographic horizon from the studied point. The Rhône plain opens the direction, while the final slopes and ridges near Ventoux determine the visible clearance.

How far is Avignon from Mont Ventoux?

The geodesic distance between the published coordinates is 45.3 km. This is much shorter than the major Alpine examples, but local terrain remains decisive.

What conditions affect the view of Mont Ventoux?

The exact position in Avignon, urban obstacles and air transparency can alter a real observation. Sightelo does not represent buildings, trees, haze or clouds.

How is this sight line calculated?

The calculation follows the terrain profile to the supplied 1,910 m summit elevation, corrects for Earth curvature and uses the standard refraction enabled in this example before checking for blocking terrain.
